Hair loss is a problem for many men in the United States. By the time 85% of all men reach the age of 50, they have significant hair loss. Not all of this may be as noticeable. A man can lose up to 50% of his hair before it is noticeable by other people. More and more men are turning to follicular unit extraction (FUE). These produce much better results and look very natural. Some men who have had scalp micropigmentation will also consider this procedure.
There are some things you can do to have a better recovery time after a FUE hair transplant. Here are some tips to help get you through the process.
- Refrain from washing your hair. You will go home the same day as your hair restoration procedure but you should not wash your hair. The less you can pester your scalp after you have the procedure done, the better. If you have experience with scalp micropigmentation, you know how sensitive your scalp can be. When you leave the hair clinic, they will make an appointment for you to go back and have your scalp looked at.
- Follow the hair clinic’s instructions. The hair clinic staff with wash, condition and dry your hair. Your scalp will them be examined by the hair loss specialist. Depending on your progress, you should be given special instructions for you. You will need to take care when washing your hair for anywhere between four and six days. After about a week, you should be able to wash and dry your hair any way you want.
- Do not get a perm or dye your hair. As hard as it may be, you need to do nothing to your hair that requires it to be exposed to any kinds of harsh chemical processing. If you like to color, perm or do anything else to your hair that uses harsh and caustic chemicals, you will need to wait at least 30 days after your FUE procedure. Again, if you have had anything done to your scalp, such as micropigmentation, you know that your scalp is very sensitive. Before the procedure you need to stop any chemical treatments for at least a week (some hair clinics ask patients to stop up to a month before the treatment).
- Take it easy after the FUE procedure. FUE hair transplants are simple procedures but they are surgery. The average time you will be worked on is eight hours. People who have undergone a FUE procedure need to recover. This is a great time to sit back, binge watch some great TV and relax. Most people are able to go back to work within about two to four days. There are a few reasons to take it easy after a hair transplant. When you work out, you get a lot more blood flow to the scalp and you want to avoid that. The other is just the recovery you need after a surgery.
- Follow the instructions you are given to the letter. When you go to the clinic, they devise a post-op plan for you. This was mentioned earlier but it is important enough to repeat. Your hair loss specialist designed a plan for you to help make sure your hair transplant is as successful as possible. You should be given special products to use that will help with your healing process. Most people have some scabbing. People often use their existing hair to cover these areas during the recovery process. The average person feels ok going out and about without a hat after about a week.
- Do not expect your hair to grow overnight. When you go into the hair transplant recovery, you should be realistic about your hair restoration. This is not like scalp micropigmentation. The new grafted hair will start growing anywhere from two to four months after the procedure. Hair grows in its own cycles. After eight months, most of the grafts should be growing. Give it time. Once the hair grafts have grown out, it should look natural. You didn’t lose your hair overnight and it won’t grow back overnight.
You will have a better experience with your FUE transplant with these tips.
