Orthodontic treatment for dental misalignment is most often thought of as a treatment for children. And while it’s true that 80% of American teenagers are currently undergoing some form of orthodontic treatment, it’s not impossible for one to reach adulthood without undergoing the treatment they need.
If you need adult orthodontics to improve the appearance and health of your teeth, you are more than likely considering invisible braces as one of your options. And while invisible braces are a great alternative to traditional braces, there are still a few drawbacks to getting them.
Do you know as much as you should about choosing invisible braces as your adult orthodontics treatment? To learn all about the realities of these invisible teeth braces, here’s a list of their biggest pros and cons:
Pro: Invisible braces boast a reduced treatment time
With traditional metal braces, the average time period to complete treatment is about two years — and you can’t remove your braces, meaning they’re going to be in your mouth 24/7. However, you can remove your invisible braces for about two hours each day, and your treatment will only last between six and 18 months.
Con: They are high-maintenance
Orthodontic treatment with invisible braces involves a series of invisible trays that are switched out every two weeks or so as your teeth adjust to each tray. In addition, you’ll have to visit your orthodontist once every four to six weeks until your treatment is finished, which is a time commitment many people aren’t able to make.
Pro: Invisible braces are just that — invisible
Perhaps the biggest reason why invisible braces are such a popular choice for adult orthodontics is because they’re a much more discreet option for orthodontic treatment than traditional braces. With invisible braces, no one will know you’re wearing braces unless you tell them — allowing you to keep smiling without feeling self-conscious about it.
Con: They are more costly
Invisible braces are a little less budget-friendly than other orthodontic options. It costs approximately $5,000 to undergo this treatment, where the cheapest traditional braces will cost around $1,800. However, if you can afford it and you would genuinely feel better and more confident with invisible braces, they can be the best choice you have.
