The “secrets” to staying healthy are all over the media these days. But the truth is that health isn’t guaranteed. The quality of medical care and the expertise of today’s doctors have both improved, but being proactive is the biggest factor in staying healthy. Getting the right health care can be tough for some Americans, especially in their later years. As you sift through your list of doctors, here are three ailments you’ll want to keep in mind.
1. Back Pain
Some people say that back pain is just a part of the aging process, albeit an unpleasant one. If this is you, welcome to the club. Recent studies show that 69% of Americans already have low back pain on a daily basis. The truth is back pain is a real problem. Especially when you consider that 40% or more of people with long-term back pain do not seek proper medical treatment. Back pain may catch up with you eventually, but don’t be blindsided. Seek proper treatment early.
2. Dizziness
Falls contribute to many trips to the emergency room, and one of the major causes is dizziness. We can all get a little dizzy or lose our balance sometimes, but constant issues present a danger. Some estimates say that as much as 65% of people over 60 experience dizziness on a daily basis. Just a momentary loss of balance can mean a trip to the clinic. If you experience this symptom often, get it checked out.
3. Ankle Sprain
In combination with number two on our list, ankle sprains can be one consequence of a fall, leading to days or even weeks of recovery. Everybody has rolled an ankle at some point, but each decade it gets harder to get back on your feet afterward. There is an estimated 25,000 Americans that incur an ankle sprain every day. While you may not get to control if this statistic includes you, awareness is always a beautiful thing.
Age catches us all, but good health is what makes life enjoyable at any age. Having access to good health care is how we make that happen. When you’re faced with choosing from the endless list of doctors that are out there, try to consider what they treat.
Choosing healthcare that fits your needs will go further than you think.
