In his most recent video, What Not to Do After Receiving Dental Implants, Dr. Brett Langston, DMD, a Dental Implant and Aesthetic Specialist in Atlanta, GA, shares the Don’ts of patient recovery following surgery for dental implants.
According to Dr. Langston, patients should follow these best practices during recovery:
- Avoid physical exertion for 24-48 hours.
- Don’t touch the surgery site with your fingers or tongue.
- Avoid hard, hot, or very cold foods and drinks.
- Refrain from smoking or spitting.
- Take your antibiotics.
- Keep your follow-up appointment.
Following surgery, the healing process depends on the blood clot formed at the site remains in place. Heavy physical activity can raise the heart rate enough to increase blood pressure, which could disturb the clot.
While touching the implant with your fingers or tongue may be tempting, patients should avoid doing so. It’s vital to avoid disturbing the area, which could impede your recovery. This special care includes avoiding hard foods that can cause excessive pressure on the implant area.
Dr. Langston also advises his patients against smoking or spitting. Both activities create a vacuum in your mouth that can dislodge the blood clot and complicate your recovery.
Finally, patients must finish their antibiotics medication as prescribed by the doctor. Antibiotics provide insurance against infection, which is vital while your surgery heals.
By following these best practices, patients can expect the best recovery from dental implant surgery.
