Excessive Estrogen Level in Women – Symptoms and Causes

Estrogen is a natural occurring hormone which has important functions. It helps for the maintenance of reproductive health, as well for healthy skin, hair and bones. However, in some cases there are very high levels of estrogen and this condition is known as “estrogen dominance”. Excessive estrogen levels are responsible for menstrual problems and PMS problems; they are associated with breast cancer and other medical issues.

Excessive estrogen levels in women is signalled by the following symptoms: dry skin, vaginal dryness, tender breasts, low libido, mood changes, night sweats, water retention, loss of memory, insomnia, early occurring puberty or menopause, irregular periods, irritability, heavy and long lasting periods, PMS, depression, fatigue, weight gain, migraine, infertility, miscarriage, fibrocystic breasts, polycystic ovary syndrome, breast cancer. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and even life-threatening.

Excessive Estrogen Level in WomenEstrogen dominance is caused by various factors, the most common of which are insufficient levels of progesterone, exposure to xenoestrogens and phytoestrogens, birth control pills, and hormone replacement therapy.
In addition, excessive estrogen levels may a result of serious diseases, and that’s why it is very important to consult a doctor in case you experience the above-mentioned symptoms.

Also, estrogen dominance may be caused by obesity as fat cells produce this hormone. Excessive alcohol consumption may also become a reason for increased estrogen levels because the balance of this hormone is controlled by the liver, and if the liver’s function is improper, then the balance of estrogen won’t be maintained.
