How To Treat Hair Loss
Hair is something that many of us take for granted, in this case, we don’t know what we’ve got until it’s gone. For those of us dealing with hair loss, who have tried home remedies and over the counter regrowth treatments, there is still an option. Hair transplant surgery.
What Is Hair Transplant Surgery?
Hair transplant surgery works to fill the area where hair loss is occurring. This is done in a few different ways.
- Follicular Unit Strip Surgery. With the FUSS method of hair restoration specialists will remove a strip of skin from the back of your scalp. This skin is then sutured together, and the removed section will be turned into a series of small grafts; around 500 to 2,000 approximately, each containing only a single strand or a couple strands of hair. How many depends on the type of hair, the thickness, and the overall quality. These grafts are then used to supplement the area where the hair is thinning or otherwise missing.
- Follicular Unit Extraction. The FUE transplant involves the specialists shaving the back area of your head, and removing individual follicles for transplant to the desired location.
After the point of extraction the surgery plays out in a similar fashion. The desired area is cleaned and numbed, with holes or slits being created to allow for implantation. The grafts are inserted into place with the process taking anywhere from 4 to 8 hours depending on how large the site is. Additional surgery, can be performed if a thicker result is desired later on.
Recovery
When it comes to how to treat hair loss, this surgery is one of the most performed and trusted options for long lasting results. When it comes to the recovery process, you can expect the area to continue to be tender and sensitive for several days. Pain medication can be taken to help relieve the irritation. Bandages may also be applied over the area, but can be removed when you return to your normal activities within 2 to 5 days.
A couple weeks after the initial surgery the implanted hair will begin to fall out; however, this is completely normal. Growth of brand new hair from the inserted follicles will begin within 6 to 9 months. While this may seem like a long time to wait for the results it is well worth it for most patients.
An Option For Long Lasting Hair
When thinking about how to treat hair loss there are many over the counter options that just can’t produce long lasting results. Hair transplant surgery offers long lasting, reliable results, without a terribly long period of recovery. Though it can take a while to see tangible results, once hair starts coming in, it is there to stay for years and years to come.
