Male Hair Loss – Treatment Options

Males are very often affected by hair loss which is known as male pattern baldness. This kind of hair loss is hereditary – it is passed from generation to generation. However, there are still some treatment options which can improve the condition.

The first thing a male should do when he experience the problem is to decide how he feels about it. The different men affected by hair loss react in a different ways and this is absolutely natural. So, you must determine if hair loss is a serious problem you need to treat as soon as possible, or you will accept it and live with it without any worries.

Hair loss is something natural and you should try to accept it as such. You better leave your hair as it is or shave it, rather than trying to hide the balding areas with a wig. In case you can’t accept the situation and want to find a solution, the following medical treatments may be useful for you.

male hair loss treatmentsThere are two main medications for treatment of hair loss: Minoxidil and Finasteride.

Minoxidil (Regaine) was originally developed for treatment of high blood pressure and hair growth is its side effect. It is applied to the scalp two times per day and works for about 60% of the men who use it. However, the results disappear when its usage is discontinued.

Finasteride (Propecia) is a tablet that is taken orally. It has an anti-androgen effect because it blocks the male hormones which cause hair loss. Higher doses of this medication are used to reduce the size of the prostate gland in cases of benign prostatic hypertrophy. It is effective in about 80% of the cases and its usage should continue in order to keep the achieved results.

Surgery is another treatment option and it is considered as the only reliable method. There are three main techniques for hair growth restoration: a transplant, scalp reduction and flap surgery.
