Genetically modified foods are prepared by the supply of new properties to the organism. This happens as a gene is transferred from one organism to the other. The first genetically modified food appeared in 1994 – ripening delayed tomatoes. Nowadays such foods are very common and we actually are never sure if the food we consume is genetically modified or not.
The advantages and disadvantages of genetically modified foods are subjected to great discussion. Certain experts believe that these foods have particular advantages, while others claim genetically modified foods have numerous risks.
The biggest advantage of genetically modified foods is that they grow faster. This is an important characteristic in this world with billions of people. In addition, the ability to reduce and eliminate any weaknesses in these foods is another big advantage because this is very beneficial for human health.
The disadvantages of genetically modified foods are more that their advantages. For example, these foods can obtain undesirable properties or the technology may cause degeneration which leads to production of low quality products. Also, their preservation is quite difficult.
In addition, if the genetically modified foods have been made resistant to antibiotics, this resistance may be transferred to the humans who consume the foods. This may lead to ineffective antibiotic treatment.
