Nutrient-Rich Foods to Stock in Your Fridge

If you are on a diet, there are plenty of healthy, nutrient-rich foods to eat during the summer. FridgeThis way, you will look your best when you go on vacation. Think of corn (but not genetically modified), tart cherries, and tomatoes.

 

Tomatoes are packed with powerful antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. They contain lycopene, a type of bright red carotenoid that will help protect your skin during the summer. While sunscreen is considered the first line of defense, eating tomatoes will help you to avoid sunburn. Besides, it is loaded with nutrients such as copper, magnesium, and vitamin C. It is low in cholesterol and salt which is good for your weight and health. Tart cherries are also a great addition to your summer menu. They contain substances that relieve post-workout pain and aid weight loss. They are loaded with essential nutrients such as manganese, iron, and dietary fiber and are low in cholesterol content. Speaking of weight loss, some studies have shown that eating tart cherries indeed helps people slim down. A research team at the University of Michigan made an experiment with rats that were given tart-cherry powder. Those fed with tart-cherry power gained less body fat and weight than those that were given foods rich in carbohydrates. Then there is corn (but not genetically modified!) Fresh sweet corn is nutritious, healthy, and tasty at the same time. It is high in antioxidants that help reduce the risk for diseases such as macular degeneration. Besides, corn contains other important nutrients such as iron, vitamin A, and dietary fiber.

 

As a rule, you should avoid foods that are high in trans and saturated fat as well as products that contain simple carbohydrates. Some experts recommend eating foods with a low GI (glycemic index value) such as lettuce, cucumber, and others. There are different low-fat and low-carb diets to choose from, including the Atkins, Paleo, South Beach, and many others. Whatever the diet of choice, make sure you eat a balanced diet and include carbohydrates, dietary fiber, protein, and healthy fats in your menu.
